Procrastinators Club of Norway

Procrastinators Club of Norway so far...
by Tom Duckie Anda (acting leader of PCN)

Can hardly belive how time flies, it seems like yesterday, but it was all the way back in 1989 I read an article in the Norwegian edition of Reader's Digest (Det Beste) about Les Waas and his club Procrastinators Club of America (PCA). The article was very funny and showed that these American procrastinators had a sense of humor and procrastinated with a smile. This was just the thing for me a notorious procrastinator of proportions. I immediately started the task of founding Procrastinators Club of Norway (PCN). And as early as 1993 we were up and running. We adopted the catching latin slogan "Festina lente!" which translates to "Hurry, but slowly".

As an adman, Les Waas came up with the Mister Softee jingle by the way, so every time you hear that blaring from an ice cream truck, you know who to thank, or curse, depends on whether you are taking a nap or craving some ice cream I guess.

Luring people into the fold via BBS communications, is how we got our first few members, and later as we got online we got even more members via this homepage. Today we have over 50 registered members. And most likely a whole lot of potential members that just haven't gotten around to applying yet.

Eventually PCN had to get a contact address. i.e. a post box. In order for that to happen we had to appoint a temporary committee. And I took the role as acting leader til we could get around to having our first general assembly, and elect a leader. We still have not had neither a general assembly nor a committee meeting, so the temporary committee, as well as the acting leader, are still in charge. Last time we discussed the topic, nobody could remember who was in the temporary committee anyways. By the way, the Norwegian Postal service canceled our post box, apparently we did not empty it often enough. Some people just do not appreaciate proper procrastination.

Suddenly, in 1995, one of our members suggested that we should hand out "Business of the Year" and "Procrastinator of the Year" awards on an annual basis. I found this to be an excellent idea, and since we have had no general assembly or committee meeting as of date, I took the liberty of deciding in 1998 that the awards would become an annual celebration of procrastination. The award winners will be presented on our homepage. And members of PCN as well as outsiders may nominate buissnesses and private persons for the awards. Nobody got around to nominating anyone yet, but I am sure it will be a festive celebration when we get around to it.

Nominations may be submitted to the following address: forslag@somle.net

We started thinking about celebrating our 10th anniversary, back in 2007. We were also planning to register the club officially. I filled in the proper forms in 2002, so I just had to pop them in the mail. 2007 seemed like a good year for it, if only I could find the forms. Tempus fugit, it is 2024 already, maybe we should just skip the 10th anniversary and make a plan for the 20th instead? It is too early for the 30th, as that was last year.

And we have made plans for a few demonstrations and other activities. So far we have made the plans but not acted upon them. I am sure we'll put our procrastination aside in a moment of weakness and actually do some of the activities.

As mentioned earlier we are aiming to celebrate our 20th annivercary soonish. A planning committee has not been appointed yet. I am sure that the celebrations will be grand, if we ever get around to it. You never know, it might suddenly happen!

Sadly Mr. Waas passed away in 2016, before I got around to asking him permission to start a Norwegian sister organisation to the PCA. Mr. Waas, your legend lives on through procrastinators around the world. Rest in peace.
